As you probably realize, dough is one of the most versatile substances involved in creating food. From this one simple substance springs such a vast array of foods that it is sometimes unbelievable to think that it is really just a mixture of flour, liquid, and grains.

So what exactly makes different types of dough differ from each other, and how is it that different cultures have been able to create so many different-tasting foods from it?

All in the Ingredients

Although dough is commonly thought of to be made from the same ingredients, that isn’t exactly true.

For starters, the grains used in different types of though may differ greatly, and it should be obvious that they would influence the finished product in more ways than one. On top of that, even the type of flour and the wheat that it is created from can also alter the texture, taste, and type of dough that is created.

Not to mention that while most dough is created with water, some dough uses milk or even eggs instead. That can really change the texture of the dough, and it is most commonly found in the creation of certain types of pastries, particularly those that are puffy in nature.

It is also worth noting that although these are the core ingredients of dough, there are other ingredients as well that are often added into the mix. Sugar and salt in particular are used to sweeten or salt the dough accordingly.

On top of that other spices, and foods are often added to certain types of dough to provide a finished product that is varied in taste!

While this doesn’t affect the core nature of the dough, the final product that comes out is definitely heavily affected by the process of cooking that the dough goes through and that’s why the same type of dough can turn out in various ways at the end of the day.
